Disappearing Arctic Sea Ice Threatens Canada's Polar Bears: Expert Panel

CANADA, Dec. 4 -- A committee of wildlife experts warned on Monday that Canada's largest land predator, the polar bear, was at risk of disappearing from its vast Arctic landscape as melting Arctic sea ice makes hunting prey a challenge.
"It is clear we will need to keep a close eye on this species," said Graham Forbes, co-chair of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), in a statement. "Significant change is coming to its entire range."
He explained that the bears use sea ice and the "same sit-and-wait techniques familiar to ice fishers" to hunt seals for food.
Predictions of longer ice-free Arctic summers will make hunting "much more difficult" for polar bears, he said.
Inuit, however, are cautiously optimistic the bears will adapt.
In its latest assessment, COSEWIC incorporated both science and Inuit knowledge. It concluded that "while not currently threatened with extinction, the species faces an uncertain future."
Its status was listed as a Special Concern, meaning it may become threatened or endangered.
Canada is home to two-thirds of the world's polar bear population.
At last count in 2011, there were 15,500 polar bears in Canada.
The same year, Ottawa listed the animal under its Species at Risk Act, requiring a conservation strategy be put in place to alleviate human threats to the iconic bears.
COSEWIC also expressed concerns about declining Chinook salmon stocks along the Pacific coast, and Black Ash after two billion trees in the Great Lakes region were killed by Emerald Ash Borer beetles.

NASA's InSight Spacecraft Touches Down on Mars

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 27-- NASA's InSight spacecraft touched down safely on Mars on Monday, kicking off a two-year mission to explore the deep interior of the Red Planet.
NASA's online live broadcast reported InSight touched down on Mars at approximately 2:54 p.m. EST (1954 GMT) on Monday, after a six-month, 300-million-mile (480-million-km) journey.
The lander plunged through the thin Martian atmosphere at about 2:47 p.m. EST (1947 GMT), heatshield first, and used a supersonic parachute to slow down. Then, it fired its retro rockets to slowly descend to the surface of Mars, and landed on the smooth plains of Elysium Planitia.
InSight is being followed to Mars by two mini-spacecraft comprising NASA's Mars Cube One (MarCO), the first deep-space mission for CubeSats which attempt to relay data from InSight as it enters the planet's atmosphere and lands.
At about 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT), MarCO sent back the first picture of Mars.
InSight will detect geophysical signals deep below the Martian surface, including marsquakes and heat. Scientists will also be able to track radio signals from the stationary spacecraft, which vary based on the wobble in Mars' rotation, according to NASA.
InSight and MarCO flight controllers monitored and cheered for the spacecraft's successful entry, descent and landing from mission control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
Launched on May 5, InSight marks NASA's first Mars landing since the Curiosity rover in 2012 and the first dedicated to studying the deep interior of Mars.

Cambodia Chooses Mutual Interests for All Nations, Not US or China: Cambodian Youth President

Phnom Penh, Nov. 23 – “It’s not about this one or that one, it’s about mutual interests for all nations. Principally, Cambodia welcomes everyone,” Hun Many, son of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, spoke at the Bangkok Post International Forum 2018 “Asian Transformation: the Changing Landscape”, participated by 500 politicians, investment bigshots, professors and scholars.
Held in Bangkok on Wednesday, the forum talks about the changing of political and economic landscapes in Asia.

“The circumstances may come where ASEAN will have to choose one or the other,” Lee said at the 33rd ASEAN Summit in Singapore. “I hope it does not happen soon.”
Many, currently President of Youth Federations of Cambodia, wrote on his Facebook Thursday that at the forum, he also mentioned (1) Cambodia’s progress in post-genocide regime; (2) Cambodia in ASEAN context: opportunities and roles of Cambodia in the region; and (3) How ASEAN leaders of the next generation prepares for the transformation, particularly in digital economy and information technology sectors.

China, Philippines agree to step up legislative exchanges

MANILA, Nov. 21  -- Visiting President Xi Jinping has called on legislative bodies from China and the Philippines to further exchange experience in state governance and push forward multilevel, multiform cooperation for the development of the two nations' bilateral ties.
Xi expressed the hope that the Philippines' top legislature will play a bigger role in promoting China-Philippines friendship, during a meeting with the Philippines' House of Representatives Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and President of the Senate Vicente Sotto III here on Wednesday.
Friendly exchanges between legislative bodies of both sides form an important part of the China-Philippines relations, which now stand at a new historic starting point and thus possess broad development prospect, Xi said.
In recent years, the China-Philippines relations have displayed new vitality and achieved leapfrog development, bringing benefits to the two peoples as well as encouraging regional peace and stability, according to the president.
The upgrade of the China-Philippines relations to comprehensive strategic cooperation had been jointly announced by Xi and his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte here on Tuesday.
"We must continue going on the right path, deepen practical cooperation, consolidate the material basis of the bilateral ties, expand people-to-people exchanges, cement public support, properly handle the South China Sea issue, stick to the right direction for the development of bilateral ties, and make good neighbors and partners that share the prosperity," Xi told Arroyo and Sotto.
The president praised them for being good and old friends of the Chinese people and contributing to the China-Philippines friendship for a long time. He also called for more support from the legislative bodies on practical cooperation, especially in areas of education, culture and tourism.
For their part, Arroyo and Sotto, while applauding the upgrade of the bilateral ties, both expressed their willingness to step up exchanges with Chinese legislative bodies and deepen practical cooperation in all fields, for the benefits of the two peoples and the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.
With all-round cooperation going well and China being one of the most important partners for the Philippines' economic development, the Philippines-China relations are now at the best period in history, said Arroyo and Sotto.
The Philippines would like to learn from China's success in achieving rapid economic and social development, push for more cooperation in trade and infrastructure, strengthen people-to-people exchanges and better benefit the two peoples, they added.

Angkor, The temples of Angkor in Cambodia

Cambodia, In Angkor, there are ruins of Khmer temples, built between the 9th and 15th century, lost in the heart of the wild forests north of the Tonle Sap. Visiting this ancient medieval city, half buried in the jungle, offered me a real journey back in time, in the heart of a vast and mysterious forest, in the depths of Cambodia.

Discover the temples of Angkor by bike

As soon as I entered the forest, I felt spellbound by the place. The jungle, lakes, stones and canals offer a unique and promising atmosphere.

We have in three days toured the temples. On foot, we have borrowed hundreds of galleries, moats, shrines, towers and terraces, cycling we have traveled little used paths, in an explosive nature.

Every time you passed a door, we arrived on a landscape out of the ordinary. We cross monkeys and elephants many times. I will not detail everything but here in a few words and photos the places that have marked me the most.

The Ta Prohm

Ta Prohm was for me the most magical discovery. Here, the trees have taken possession of the places, the rocks are colored by the wild nature, the roots tear the blocks of stone and devour the buildings ...

The tour offers a palette of reds, yellows and greens make this temple unique. I had the real feeling of walking in a supernatural setting, like in a fantasy movie, a comic or a video game ...

The Preah Khan

We reach with our bicycle the Preah Khan temples, its corridors, its columns and its leaning trees rooted on the walls. Everything is beautiful. We are amazed and sweaty because the sun is beating.

The Angkor Wat

Around 11 o'clock we visited Angkor Wat. A good hour after our arrival, sounded the lunch hour for the coaches of tourists who evacuated the place! We were really calm.

Angkor Wat is the largest temple but also the best preserved. It has large shady gardens and is surrounded by canals

We go from corridors to corridors, from classes to classes and we get lost in the labyrinths. The bas-reliefs are magnificent.

The Bayon

We then go to Bayon (or Bayuan), the temple of King Jayavarman VII to admire hundreds of carved faces. It was the capital and central temple of Khmer in the 13th century.

The Phimeanakas

After a lunch on the terrace of the elephants we drive to the Hindu temple Phimeanakas, there is no cat, nobody, we are alone at the top, a real pleasure! The view of the temples and the forest is beautiful.

The Baphuon

We finish in beauty with the small temple of Baphuon. We are the last, all alone again.

The guards come to ask us to leave because the park closes. We take our time to return to the exit, so we find ourselves locked. The wooden fence lifts manually, we return to Siem Reap

Practical information for 3 days in Angkor

The map of the Angkor site

Entrance ticket for Angkor

Attention tickets are not bought at the entrance of the forest but 4 km from it on the road to Sieam Reap. We had to ride a bike because a checkpoint officer told us the news!

We went to buy a 3 day Pass at $ 40 (which has gone up to $ 62 since it seems)

How to come to Seam Reap?

We joined Seam Reap from the 4,000 islands in Laos, with a 2-night stopover in Kratie, a city on the Mekong River that was on our bus route. We drove 8 hours by overnight bus from Kratie to Siem Reap.

For the return, we took a night bus to Phnom Penh, without any difficulty! 7 hours drive + breaks.

Where to sleep in Seam Reap?

We stayed at Chamraoen's Home. Home, rooms, terraces on top, I recommend.

Quote, How many hours a day, a stairs?

Below we will show you how long you can go to the stairs that can make you look good. What's going on?

You should set the length of this staircase clearly if you want to lose weight. You can climb a half hour or hour by dividing your time if you just started. If you can climb 200 stairs daily, up six times, you will be able to get better. Alternatively, you can go up the stairs for 12 minutes per day for two months, then you will see results. Walking up the stairs can help keep the blood in your body easier, keeping your feet clean, and making your ankle more comfortable. So you should use foot stairs to use the elevator to maintain good health and even make you look pretty.

Want to feel good, what should you do?

If you experience occasional unhappiness, there may be a lot of things you can do to improve your feeling. To be able to try the following, try the following:

  1. Exercise regularly, focusing on activities that promote stamina, such as yoga.
  2. Consuming balanced nutrition and lowering the consumption of sweet foods and drinks
  3. Avoid alcohol
  4. Get more sleep
  5. Seek out social and living support.

Knowledge, They become what they are

Parents can hardly influence the personality of their children. Decades of research show that the most important characteristics of humans are determined from birth - says the behavioral geneticist Robert Plomin.

Anyone raising children nowadays has a strenuous task ahead of them. Many parents believe that they are completely responsible for how their offspring develops: how good their children are at school; if they grow up happy and contented; how sociable and friendly they become. The good news for those who suffer from this comprehensive responsibility: that is not true. True, parents are incredibly important to the lives of their children. At the same time, however, they have little influence on their personal development.

Instead, the parents' greatest gift to their children is their genotype. For many people, that's hard to believe. Parents have a strong belief that their education is a crucial factor in the future lives of their children. They feed them, they help them learn to read and write; they encourage shy children or make them practice an instrument. Why else should parents buy parenting guides? Why are they constantly being told how to do it right and fearing the fear that they might do it wrong? Now, the influence of parents in some areas can not be denied - who does not learn manners at home, it will have trouble throughout life. However, in terms of personality traits such as intelligence, shyness or musicality, the parent influence is enormously overestimated.

The reasons for this misjudgment lie back over a hundred years. When psychology became established as a science at the beginning of the twentieth century, it placed the impact of the environment, especially that of its parents, as the formative force of human behavior at the center of its theories. The doctrine of "environmentalism" - we are what we have learned - dominated psychological thinking for decades. Already with Freud the family environment was considered as the key factor of our mental development. Schizophrenia, for example, was understood as a consequence of maternal misconduct in the first years of childhood of children.

It was not until the 1960s that geneticists began to revise this explanation of human behavioral differences. In fact, mental traits and illnesses accumulate in families. But is that the family environment, so the education? Little by little, researchers questioned whether genetic causes are responsible for these similarities in families. After all, the inheritance of children is 50 percent identical to that of their parents and siblings.

Over the past four decades, scientists have been studying specific relationships to accurately measure the effects of genes and the environment-families with twins or twins and those with adoptive children. For example, they compared how identical twin pairs (genetically 100 percent identical) differ from dizygotic pairs (genetically identical to 50 percent). Equally meaningful are such surveys of identical twins who grew up in different families after birth. Thousands of these and similar studies involving many thousands of pairs of twins have produced vast amounts of results, all of which have one message: they show the massive influence of genes on all of the characteristics that distinguish us humans. That is, the physical and psychological differences between individuals - in terms of height, intelligence, mental health, or personality traits such as openness, motivation, or self-control are, to a large extent, caused by hereditary differences in our DNA.

This is particularly evident in diseases: Whether children develop schizophrenia or bipolar disorder depends to 80 percent on what they inherit from their parents. In hereditary traits hereditary influence is less, but across all mental traits he determines over half of the differences.

The results of these studies have once again been confirmed in a meta-analysis by scientists around Peter Visscher and Danielle Posthuma in 2015, which included more than 2,700 publications with more than 14,000 pairs of twins. In addition, so-called genome-wide association studies have for ten years provided evidence of the heritability of many human characteristics. For example, since they have identified the many sites in the genome that are responsible for the heritability of a particular property, for example, since the publication of the largest association study so far, we know more than 1200 locations in the genome a few weeks ago, which correlate with differences in educational success and IQ. The result of 40 years of twin studies is often replicated and secured: at least half of our genetic make-up determines how we differ from others in our most important traits.

Top News To Go: Secret Women's Summit: Merkel met with SPD politicians

► Chancellor and CDU leader Angela Merkel met on September 12 with about 50 women from the Bundestag faction of the SPD. This reports the "mirror" in its current issue.
► The idea for the women's summit should come from a little-known SPD politician and be created in March.
► According to the report, the meeting was kept secret for reasons of external concern.

Why the message from the women's summit is important:

The Grand Coalition has been on the verge of this legislature several times.the Reason were differences between the parties in the refugee policy (before the summer break) and in dealing with constitutional protection president Hans -Georg Maaßen (after the summer break).

For the SPD is even more than for the CDU their credibility at stake.

In view of the Maaßen dispute, which was negotiated at the same time as the planned meeting in the Interior Committee and after deliberations in the Group Executive Committee, the representative of SPD leader Andrea Nahles, Katja Mast said the meeting, according to "mirror" from the day before. When Merkel asked for the reason, the SPD women should have retaken their bosses and arranged the meeting again.

The women had objectively exchanged but agreed not to let anything leak outside.

This shows that the coalition still has a basis for cooperation. But the secrecy shows how much the issues are superimposed by partisan considerations.

What you still need to know:

According to "mirror" Nahles is said to have asked to take any photos at the meeting. Too big was apparently the concern, it could be public.

But supposedly a picture was created - at the request of Merkel. It has not become public. At least not yet.

What is health promotion?

A: Health promotion allows people to improve the control of their own health. It covers a wide range of social and environmental interventions designed to promote and protect the health and quality of life at the individual level by addressing the main causes of ill health, including prevention, and not only focusing on treatment and healing.

Health promotion has 3 essential elements:

1. Good governance
Health promotion requires policymakers across government departments to make health a central focus of government policy. This means that they must consider health implications in all decisions they make and prioritize policies that prevent people from getting sick and protecting them from trauma.

These policies need to be based on regulations that harmonize incentives for the private sector with public health objectives, for example by aligning fiscal policies on harmful and harmful products, such as alcohol, alcohol, and alcohol. tobacco or foodstuffs rich in salt, sugar and fat, on measures stimulating trade in other areas.

Legislation must also promote healthy urban planning, with the creation of pedestrian-friendly cities, the reduction of air and water pollution and the implementation of measures requiring the use of seatbelts and helmets.

2. Knowledge
People need to acquire the knowledge, skills, and information to make the right health choices, for example in terms of the food they eat and the care they need. They must have the opportunity to make those choices. And they must be guaranteed an environment in which they can call for new policy measures to further improve their health.

3. Healthy cities
Cities have a crucial role to play in promoting health. Strong leadership and strong commitment at the municipal level are essential for healthy urban planning and prevention measures in communities and primary health care settings. It is from healthy cities that countries, and ultimately the world, will move towards better health.
