The far-right Identitarian Movement vilifies him, right-wing conspiracy sites like "unzensiert.at" or the "Epoch Times" mobilize against him - and not least the AfD. In right-wing and right-wing circles, a new specter is on the agenda:
The UN Global Compact on Migration. This paper is due to be signed by the UN member states in Morocco at the beginning of December.
Right-wingers believe that the European member states are opening the floodgates to an even stronger migration movement from Africa.
Already two months ago, the AfD published a "explanatory video" to show what the controversial paper means. Also in these days it spreads rapidly in the social media, about 100,000 times it was called up on Facebook, 20,000 times on Youtube.
The problem: The AfD does not explain the UN's pact in any way. Instead, the party constructs a perfidious conspiracy around the UN pact. We have the video subjected to a fact check.
1. Lie: "The UN equals all migrants"
The AfD claims: "The UN member states, for example, commit themselves to equate refugees and migrants, regardless of their legal status."
But that's a blatant lie. On the contrary, the UN has presented two separate documents, one entitled "Global Pact on Refugees", another "Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration". The AfD refers to the second paper in their video.
There is also nothing in this document about equal treatment of refugees and migrants. The UN even highlights the similarities and differences of the group very well.
The document states: "Refugees and migrants are entitled to the same human rights and fundamental freedoms that must be respected, defended and guaranteed at all times. But: migrants and refugees are their own group with different legal frameworks. "
This means that there is a very explicit distinction of the UN between the two groups. "Only refugees are entitled to receive special international protection under international refugee law," the document said.
2. Lie: Migrants can not be returned
The AFD video also states: "In practice, this may mean that even illegal migrants are not expelled to their countries of origin."
True: The AfD mixes different things here.
Migrants may not be sent back to their homeland if they face torture or other serious arbitrariness. This is called refoulement prohibition and is already part of international law. The "Global Migration Pact" would not change that.
Those for whom the refoulement prohibition applies are often people who can bring reasons for flight in any case. Because threatening them due to political or religious beliefs in the homeland torture, this is a classic case for an asylum claim.
"Illegal migrants", who therefore have no reason for departure and no residence permit in a European country, can in most cases be turned away.
The UN pact will not change that, either.
3. Lie: Human rights are being extended
The AfD claims: With the new pact, the expulsion of migrants could suddenly "violate human rights".
True: she could do that before. For human rights clearly dictate who may be deported and who is not.
The new UN document even states explicitly that it is not legally binding. It is merely a framework designed to enhance "international cooperation among all relevant actors" while maintaining "the sovereignty of all states and their obligations under international law".
4. Lie: "Illegal border crossings are no longer criminal"
The AfD states: "Depending on the legal interpretation, even illegal border crossings could no longer be criminalized."
It's a hair's throw. The UN writes: "We commit ourselves to protect our national borders in a coordinated manner, to promote bilateral and regional cooperation, to ensure the security of states (...), to allow safe and regular border crossings of people and to encourage irregular migration stop. "
It also states: "We commit ourselves to implementing a border protection policy that respects national sovereignty."
Means: States continue to have their own border guards in their hands. Furthermore, legal migration should be encouraged and illegal ones prevented.
5. Lie: Soon everyone can come to Europe
The AfD says: Soon everyone can come to Europe legally if he is in a "difficult situation".
That too is nonsense. On the contrary, the UN stresses that it wants to provide better local living conditions in order to prevent "irregular" migration.
An important part of the pact is the fight against flight, the creation of better economic conditions in the countries of origin. This is to prevent people from "seeking a better life elsewhere through irregular migration".
6. Lie: criticism should be stopped
The next assertion of the AfD: states are called in the contract to prevent criticism of immigration.
No. That's not in the document. All that is said is that all citizens should have access to 'objective, evidence-based, clear information on the merits and challenges of migration'.
"Misleading narratives that promote a negative view of migrants" should be avoided.
7. Lie: "The sovereignty of states is abolished"
The AfD finds: "The sovereignty of states is abolished in migration issues."
That is an at least peculiar view. Because once again: The pact is not legally binding - more a declaration of intent of deeper cooperation.
The paper even explicitly emphasizes the importance of national independence in migration policy. "The Global Compact again confirms the right of states to determine their own migration policy," it says.
